The Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and the Emory University Department of Pediatrics invite interested applicants for the position of Aflac Leukemia /Lymphoma Clinician. The Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center provides a rich and collaborative environment for basic, clinical, and translational research and boasts a diverse faculty. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Program is an integral component of the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center and currently includes 21 faculty members and 8 APPs. Ideal candidates will have a strong record of demonstrated clinical expertise caring for pediatric leukemia and lymphoma patients. A track record of involvement in pediatric cancer clinical trials is required. Aflac faculty are part of the Winship Comprehensive Cancer Institute and are on the faculty of the Emory University School of Medicine. The Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center has close affiliations with research investigators within the Winship Cancer Institute, Emory University, and the Georgia Institute of Technology, and a willingness to collaborate across departmental or center boundaries is essential.

 

About the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center

The successful candidate will join one of the strongest pediatric hematology/oncology programs in the country.

·In 2023, the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center was ranked No. 8 in the nation for Pediatric Cancer by US News and World Report

·We are home to one of the largest pediatric cancer programs in the nation, which follows more than 800 children and young adults with leukemia and lymphoma each year

·Each year our team cares for more than 150 newly diagnosed leukemia and lymphoma patients using a variety of treatment protocols, including blood and marrow transplant (BMT), hematopoietic stem cell transplant, chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T therapy, and Phase I and II clinical trials for patients whose cancer has relapsed or is not responding to treatment

·More than 9,000 children with cancer and blood disorders are treated annually at the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center

·The Aflac pediatric oncology program sees ~500 new cancer diagnoses each year. Aflac is the pediatric component of the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University.

·The Aflac pediatric hematology program is the largest in the country (including >2,000 active patients with sickle cell disease, and 600 with bleeding or clotting disorders)

·We are home to largest pediatric Sickle Cell program in the country, conducting basic, translational, and clinical research related to Sickle cell disease and hemoglobinopathies

·The Aflac Blood and Marrow Transplantation program performs ~80 transplants each year, and is one of the leaders in curative therapies for hemoglobinopathies.

·The Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center has 125 faculty members and approximately 50 Advance Practice Providers (APPs) conducting basic, translational, and clinical research related to pediatric oncology and hematology disorders, with expertise in leukemias, lymphomas, brain tumors, neuroblastoma, sarcomas, rare tumors, renal tumors, CAR T-cell therapies, hemoglobinopathies and hemophilia.

·The Aflac fellowship program accepts six fellows each year for intensive clinical and research training in pediatric hematology/oncology. We are one of the few pediatric programs with an NIH-funded T32 training grant in pediatric non-malignant hematology

 

This position will devote most of its effort to attending to the inpatient service and outpatient clinical responsibilities in the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, with the remaining time devoted to research and teaching.

 

Proposed Clinical Role

 

  • Clinical Role: Devote effort to the care of patients with a diagnosis of leukemia and lymphoma at the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center located at Arthur M. Blank Hospital.

-This includes serving as attending on the inpatient service as well as weekly care provided in the outpatient clinic.   

-Outpatient care will also include LL sedation services provided in the clinic.

 

·Provide exemplary clinical service and assure that patients cared for by you receive only the highest quality care.

 

  • Demonstrate a pattern of excellence and ongoing contributions in clinical medicine as well as teaching.

·Play a role in the education and training program of the pediatric Hem/Onc/BMT Division, including access to and involvement with medical students, residents, fellows, and occasionally physicians in practice.

 

Proposed Research Role

 

  • Continue to develop your research, quality, teaching, and administrative activities in LL program activities under the mentorship of Dr. Sharon Castellino and other LL faculty.
  • Continue to develop your research activities to publish in peer-reviewed journals as well as form the basis for grant coverage.
  • Seek and maintain extramural funding to support your research program.
    • Emory School of Medicine has a current expectation that, once out of your initial start-up period of four years, 65% of research FTE would be covered by extramural funding.

This position will allow a wealth of opportunities for research and quality initiative collaborations within the Department of Pediatrics, with Emory’s NCI-designated cancer center (Winship Cancer Institute), with Emory's basic science departments, the Rollins School of Public Health, the American Cancer Society (located in Atlanta), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Georgia Institute of Technology.

 

Successful candidates will have:

·MD, MD/PhD, or DO degrees

·Must be Board Certified in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology

·Must be currently licensed as a physician and eligible for licensure as a physician in the State of Georgia

·Will be expected to work in a collaborative fashion conducting nationally recognized research in pediatric oncology

·A history of clinical excellence/achievement

·A strong history of teaching, mentorship of trainees and junior faculty to support growth in research and scholarship

 

The salary and rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor at Emory University School of Medicine will be commensurate with experience and accomplishments. This position's primary focus will be clinical service and administrative duties (minimum 80% clinical effort).
